Dravyaguna Vigyan is a fundamental subject in Ayurveda that focuses on the study of medicinal substances, primarily herbs, and their therapeutic properties. It involves the detailed examination of the pharmacological actions, therapeutic uses, and potential side effects of various natural substances. The subject is divided into three main components:
Dravya (Substance): The physical and chemical properties of medicinal plants.
Guna (Properties): The inherent qualities and actions of the substances, such as taste (Rasa), potency (Virya), and post-digestive effect (Vipaka).
Karma (Actions): The pharmacological and therapeutic effects of the substances on the body.
This subject also includes the classification of herbs based on their effects on the doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) and their application in treating specific diseases.
